Out with the Old

I’ve been wanting to do something productive with my old t-shirts for a while, and fourteen old t-shirts later, this was the result: a new wee welcome mat for my apartment door!

Here are the steps I took to make this little burst of color for my doorway:

1. I located all old t-shirts (and promptly put back the Incredible Hulk one I picked up back in 1991 when I took a trip to Alabama, and set aside any that have been hand-made for me).

2. I cut (tore, really) each t-shirt into 1-inch strips.

3. I sewed the ends of said strips together (I would definitely recommend using a machine for this, as it can take a while).

4. I got my fattest crochet needle out, and used a simple sc (single crochet) stitch to make this mat, which ended up measuring 15″ x 22.”

I wouldn’t have minded ending up with something bigger, but I ran out of material!

A Night of 360

I had a blast at the 360° Dance Company event the other night. We had a chance to see a snapshot of two of the company’s upcoming pieces (you can catch the full performance at City Center in October), nibbled on delicious treats, and raised some funds for a company that has some very exciting projects on the horizon! I look forward to seeing what’s in store this coming fall…

Evolution of a Glove

I’ve made hundreds of fingerless gloves, but never attempted fingers. My first try evolved slowly and painstakingly, but I’m proud of the result.

It’s off-white on the top, and black on the palm side. You can get a better sense here in this instagramm’d shot:

Thanks to two of my dear friends, Seth and Becky, for forwarding these adorable photos of their new kitty, Hodge, all wrapped up in a Brooker Hollow afghan. I made it for them when they got married, and had the pleasure of using it as a blanket when I visited them this past summer. It’s warm!

Lion Brand Spotting

I was stopped and photographed in the Lion Brand Studio the other day on 15th Street, having been spotted wearing bright yellow over-the-elbow arm warmers. I made my first pair of super long arm warmers to go with the plaid poncho I got from Oma a few years ago, and recently made another pair for this new poncho (which, much to my delight, is kind of like wearing a blanket). You can’t see the taupe-and-cream buffalo plaid lining, but it really makes the piece. I tested this new poncho-and-arm-warmer combo the other day in 30-degree weather, and was toasty warm.

I look a little gloomy-glamour here, but I swear I’m smiling! It’s impossible for me not to grin as soon as I cross the threshold into a yarn shop.

These long New Suffolk Arm Warmers are made with Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn in citron from Lion Brand. 80% acrylic. 20% wool. Washable.

Purple/Grey

It was surprisingly hard to capture the true colors of this throw-sized afghan I made for two dear friends who got married this past weekend. They like purple, so I tried to deliver on that. Apparently they’re very happy with their new blanket, so mission accomplished!
